A Corpus-based Study on Discourse Cohesion in Chinese English Learners'Argumentative Essays
With the help of Ten-thousand English Compositions of Chinese Learners(TECCL)and The Louvain Corpus of Native English Essays(LOCNESS),this study uses the online discourse cohesion analysis tool Coh-Metrix 3.0 to try to compare the similarities and differences of discourse cohesion between Chinese and foreign learners'compositions. It is intended to answer two questions:(1)Are there differences in grammatical cohesion characteristics between Chinese students'compositions and native language learners'compositions?(2)Are there differences in lexical cohesion characteristics between Chinese students'compositions and native language learners'compositions? The results show that,as far as grammatical cohesion is concerned,Chinese students'English compositions are significantly higher than those of native English students in terms of four indicators, namely, the third person plural, various conjunctions, logical conjunctions and temporal conjunctions. As far as lexical cohesion is concerned at the same time, there is no significant difference between Chinese students'English compositions and native English students'compositions in terms of local lexical cohesion indicators, but there are significant differences in terms of multiple overall lexical cohesion indicators.
