Musculoskeletal Injuries of Peacekeepers in Western Theater Command of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan
Objective To estimate the types,characteristics of diagnosis and treatments of musculoskeletal injuries(MSIs)of peacekeepers in the western theater command of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan.Methods The clinical data of patients with MSIs in the level Ⅰ hospital of an engineering battalion,the level Ⅰ hospital of an infantry battalion,the level Ⅰ hospital of a theater command and the level Ⅱ hospital of a country from December 2021 to Decem-ber 2022 were retrospectively analyzed,and the types of MSIs,diagnosis and treatments were investigated and analyzed.Results A total of 374 MSIs patients from more than 40 countries were treated,which including 261 males and 113 females,with an average age of 37.83.The main pathogenic mechanisms of MSIs were chronic degenerative diseases(32.88%,123/374),sports-related diseases(28.34%,106/374)and work-related diseases(21.65%,81/374).The most common MSIs of the peacekeepers in the western theater command of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan was low back pain,with 122 cases.Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs(NSAIDs)(44.86%)were the main treatments for MSIs in the level Ⅰ hospitals,and 40%(74/185)of the patients were transfered to the higher-level hospitals,while NSAIDs(26.68%),rehabilitation physiotherapy(24.87%)and plaster fixation(16.93%)were the main treatments for MSIs in the level Ⅱ hospitals.Conclusion MSIs are the most common diseases among peacekeepers in the western thea-ter command of United Nations Mission in South Sudan,according to the types of MSIs and the characteristics of diagno-sis and treatments,corresponding preventive drugs and medical devices should be fully prepared,and the treatment and e-vacuation plan for sudden and critical diseases should be prepared.
