A Comparative Study of Epistemic Stance Adverbs in Chinese and Western Medical Academic Discourse——A Corpus-Based Analysis of SCI Research Articles
Based on self-constructed corpora of academic English for traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine,this study compares and analyzes the frequency of use of three types of epistemic stance adverbs and their subcategories by Chinese and foreign scholars.It also delves into the usage of individual epistemic stance adverbs across three different categories to reveal the similarities and differences between Chinese and foreign scholars when expressing academic stances using epistemic stance adverbs.The findings indicate that there is an overall similarity in the use type of epistemic stance adverbs between Chinese and foreign scholars,but Chinese scholars use these adverbs more frequently than their foreign counterparts,with a significant difference.Among the subcategories of epistemic stance adverbs,Chinese scholars use fewer adverbs of probability and adverbs of indefi-nite frequency compared to foreign scholars,while they use more adverbs of evidentiality,indefinite degree and certainty.Additionally,Chinese scholars show a preference for certain specific adverbs,and there is a problem of stylistic appropriateness in the use of individual certainty adverb.Through comparative analysis,the study also points out potential deficiencies in lexical collocation and pragmatic awareness among Chinese scholars.
