In this study,PVA/starch composite film was prepared by the casting method with ultrafine-kaolin as strengthening agent to enhance its mechanical properties. The rheological properties of the film-forming liquid and the mechanics, optics, water vapor permeability, water absorption and thermal stability of the film were ana-lyzed.The results showed that the addition of kaolin decreased the viscosity of the film-forming liquid, and the apparent viscosity and shear stress reduced with the increase of shear rate. When the addition content of kaolin was 0.5%,the composite film got the strongest tensile stress of 40.95±1.20 MPa,and the maximum elongation of the break reached 141.12±0.11%at the addition content of 3%.The light absorption of the composite film decreased first and then increased. The color difference increased gradually, and the water absorption and water vapor permeability of the membrane decreased first and then were enhanced with the increase of addition of kao-lin.In conclusion,a certain amount of kaolin additio could improve the performance of composite film, which lays a theoretical foundation for the application of kaolin in composite packaging.
