Objective In order to study the effect of random pitting corrosion on the deterioration of axial compres-sion bearing capacity of U-steel column. Methods The components with random pitting defect were designed and tested by the axial pressure test. Results The experimental results showed that as the random pitting damage strength DOP increased, the yield bearing capacity of damaged components in different damage areas gradually decreased, even by 30%.The inflection point of the strain curve of components with random pitting damage ap-peared before those without pitting damage. At the same time, under the same load, the strain values of compo-nents with pitting damage were greater than those of components without pitting damage.Subsequently,a numeri-cal model of random damaged components was established and the rationality of the model was verified by using the experimental results. Finally, through the validated numerical model, relevant parameters such as pitting damage intensity DOP,pitting depth and pitting number were discussed. Conclusion The numerical results show that the increase of the strength of the pitting damage, depth and number reduces the yield bearing capacity of U-steel columns.Meanwhile, under the same number of pitting corrosion P and the same DOP,the yield bearing ca-pacity of U-steel columns shows a linear decreasing trend with the increase of the ratio J of pit depth to web(or flange)thickness.
