Residual Shear Test of Loess in Sanmenxia with Different Dry Density and Water Content
[Purposes]The effects of initial dry density, water content and vertical stress on shear strength and residual strength were studied.[Methods]A series of residual shear tests were carried out on San-menxia loess by automatic direct shear/residual shear system.[Findings]The test results showed that the shear strength stress-strain curves showed strain hardening under high water content conditions and strain softening under low water content conditions, but the residual strength stress-strain curves all showed strain hardening, mainly because the shear displacement was too small during the residual shear process,so that the loess specimens did not reach a stable residual state during the shear process;it was also found that the residual strength of the loess specimens would be reduced when the vertical stress was higher and this may be related to the fact that the water in the soil was not completely eliminated in the first shear, and in the second and third shear, the water was completely eliminated, resulting in a denser soil and increased strength;the cohesion of shear strength and residual strength showed a decreas-ing trend with the increase of water content, but the decreasing trend of internal friction angle was not very large, and some of them would rise, instead in addition, the linear relationship between the residual strength and water content of Sanmenxia loess is established in this paper, and the corresponding refer-ence equation is given.[Conclusions]The research results of this paper are of great significance to the analysis of slope stability and landslide control in Sanmenxia area.
