Anthologies of Parallel Prose in the Late Ming and Early Qing Dynasties and the Construction of Parallel Prose Literature
During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the selection of parallel prose anthologies promoted the prosperity of parallel prose literature, expanded the discourse style of parallel prose, deepened the distinction between elegance and vulgar-ity,and advanced popular and refined aesthetic criticism of parallel prose.During this period, there was a reselection of par-allel prose genres in these anthologies:previously popular genres such as biao(inscription),qi(preface),shu(letter)from the Southern Song Dynasty were revived;qingci(lyrics)and yueyu(music language)from the Song Dynasty,as well as zhangci(elegiac verse)from mid-Ming dynasty were marginalized;while new genres like shouxu(birthday congratulations)and aici(funeral orations)became dominant in parallel prose. The selection of parallel prose anthologies reflected interpene-tration and division among different genres:shouxu expanded its functions to replace some zhangci, influential genre qi in-filtrated into peripheral genres like chidu(ruler's edict)and zhangci with distinct roles for each genre-book writing had its own specialization.Parallel prosaists generally believed that their works included both pianti(parallel fu poetry)and miscella-neous writings covered broader scope than those in Southern Song Dynasty. The contemporary selections during Ming-Qing period embodied practical thoughts on parallel prose aesthetics and popular taste which were part of popular literary trends;whereas previous selections represented retrogressive ideas about reviving ancient styles along with refined criticism on ele-gant parallel proses. This era marked a shift from emphasis on popular aesthetic thoughts towards refined ones regarding par-allel prosetic works, paving way for later development during late Qing dynasty.
