On the Development of the Narrative Tradition of Chinese Poetry in Li Bai's Yuefu Poems
Li Bai's primary creative method in his Yuefu poems is to imitate old themes, with his works predominantly lyrical while also featuring prominent narrative characteristics. The narrative art of Li Bai's Yuefu poems mainly draw from the narrative and Bi and Xing techniques of the"Chuci"and the Yuefu poems of the Han and Wei dynasties. In his poems,e-vents are used to express emotions and depicted within the scenery, and emotions, events, and scenery are interwoven to cre-ate a unique lyrical style of Li Bai's.Li Bai's Yuefu poems"compete with those of the Han and Wei dynasties",primarily shown in his adeptness at condensing a subject into his own expression, where the original theme and the implied meaning complement each other.Li Bai's"Yuefu poems are each a piece of the songs of Chu"and adopt the method from Chuci of u-sing narrative as a form of lyricism, often blending emotions and events with profound implications, making the underlying theme hard to discern.Li Bai skillfully employed the narrative style of Han and Wei Yuefu to counter the extravagant style of the Yuefu Poetry in Qi and Liang periods.Compared to Du Fu,whose Yuefu narratives mainly follow the Han and Wei style,Li Bai's Yuefu poems draws from a broader range of sources, with a more complex structure and style, and has not been as highly regarded by later generations as Du Fu's Yuefu poems.
