Gary Snyder,a poet themed on mountains and hills in the United States, has written a considerable number of marine poems, thus being known as a marine poet.Snyder's marine writing includes two main aspects:marine images and marine imagination, with the latter being quite valuable and containing the following viewpoints worthy of attention:the interdependence and mutual transformation between seas and mountains;since the sea is the source of life,as well as a symbol of feminine and maternal qualities, thus the perception of mountains in the water can overturn the"common sense",and humans need to perceive the world outside of themselves.Snyder's ma-rine writing,an embodiment of his ecological ideology, may help to redress three biases in the study of marine cul-ture and literature:the binary opposition between the sea and land, the definition of the marine spirit with masculin-ity,and the absence of ocean in marine studies.
