A Phased Study on the Changes of Popular Words in Chinese Society since the Reform and Opening up
The historical evolution of popular words in Chinese society since the reform and opening up reso-nates with social changes and is inextricably linked with the development of media,for it not only coexists with the value demands of people of different eras,but also embraces multiculturalism.Reviewed from a diachronic point of view,the evolution of popular words in Chinese society since the reform and opening up has experienced four stages:the cultural enlightenment era of"ideological liberation",the popular culture era of"mass creation of words",the network culture era of"pan-entertainment",and the grassroots culture era of"noisy language".At each stage,popular words present distinct temporal differences in terms of their subject,content,and media,thus becom-ing a linguistic representation that reflects social reality,typical events,and social mentality.This paper systemati-cally reviews the development and changes of popular words in Chinese society since the reform and opening up,ob-serves the changes of popular social words with reference to the development process of media,strives to make an acccurate division of popular words,analyzes their internal change rules,studies the cultural changes behind them,so as to keep pace with the times and strengthen the value guidance of popular words.
