Survey on the recognition and consumption of rabdosia rubescens and some commonly used edible and medicinal substances among 737 residents from two cities in northwestern Henan
Objective To investigate the recognition and consumption of rabdosia rubescens and some commonly used edible and medicinal materials among residents in Jiyuan and Linzhou in northwestern Henan so as to provide scientific data for the rational compilation of the edible and medicinal materials catalog,scientific safety assessments,and standard development.Methods In total,737 adult participants who regularly consume medicinal and edible substances from two randomly selected towns(streets)in Jiyuan and Linzhou,which were the main production areas and high consumption areas of rabdosia rubescens,were screened,and the face-to-face questionnaire survey was conducted by trained and qualified interviewers from November to December 2019.Results Rabdosia rubescens(98.6％)was the most commonly consumed substance among the 737 participants,followed by gardenia(11.7％),astragalus(3.5％),codonopsis(1.8％),and rehmannia(1.1％).The main purposes for consuming these substances were for health benefits(94.7％)and nutritional value(91.3％).Of the participants,74.8％believed that the most important attribute of edible and medicinal materials was their function as food.Differences in awareness of the most important attributes of these substances among survey participants with different age group,place of residence,education level,occupation,and family income were statistically significant(P＜0.05).Of the participants,689 people(93.5％)believed that consuming edible and medicinal materials was as safe as consuming regular food,while 477 people(64.7％)believed that the consumption should be regulated and controlled.Of the participants,574 people(77.9％)believed that long-term consumption of these substances was beneficial for the body,and the main safety concerns included pesticide residue(80.7％),potentially toxic ingredients(65.4％),and microorganisms and toxins(29.7％).Conclusions Rabdosia rubescens is a substance commonly consumed by residents in Linzhou and Jiyuan.Overall,local residents have good awareness of the safety of edible and medicinal materials.However,some residents have insufficient knowledge of the attributes of these substances,which needs to be improved.Relevant departments still need to strengthen the dissemination of knowledge related to edible and medicinal materials.
