Invesigation of handgrip strength among the permanent residents aged≥40 years in Henan
Objective To understand the level of handgrip strength and its influencing factors among ≥ 40-year-old permanent residents in Henan. Methods Multi-stage stratified cluster random sampling method was used to select the permanent residents aged ≥40 years in 11 counties/districts as participants.A mechanical grip dynamometer was used to measure the strength of both hands, and the maximum value was used for the analysis.Multivariate logistic regression was used to explore the relationship be-tween demographic characteristics and handgrip strength level. Results In total,6 435 participants aged ≥40 years were enrolled, with the mean age of(57.7±9.0)years.The median number of handgrip strength was 30.5 kg for all participants,39.8 kg for males and 25.6 kg for females. The rate of low handgrip strength was 7.7%,and the standardized rate was 7.2%.Multivariate analysis results showed that age(OR=1.103,95%CI:1.090-1.116),living in urban area(OR=1.455,95%CI:1.161-1.823),history of cardiovascular disease(OR=1.276,95%CI:1.033-1.577),educational level[with primary school and below as refer-ence,junior middle school education attainment(OR=0.796,95%CI:0.639-0.992),high school and above education attainment(OR=0.535,95%CI:0.286-0.999)],BMI(OR=0.949,95%CI:0.916-0.983),muscle mass percentage(OR=0.925,95%CI:0.877-0.975)were independent influencing factors with low handgrip strength. Conclusions The handgrip strength level among the permanent residents aged ≥ 40 years in Henan is slightly lower than the national average, and the handgrip strength levels are different among different characteristics. The low handgrip strength was affected by age, education attainment, place of residence, history of cardiovascular disease,BMI,and muscle mass percentage.
