Analysis of iodine nutrition status of adults in iodine adequate areas of Henan Province in 2022
Objective To assess the iodine nutritional status among adults in iodine adequate areas in Henan Province,so as to provide a basis for the development of targeted public hearlth interventions. Methods Conducted from March to October 2022,the study utilized a cross-sectional design, surveying 60 iodine adequate counties with ≥5 iodine suitable administrative villages of Henan Province.Villages with median water iodine values ranging from 40 to 100 μg/L in each county were categorized into six strata:40-<50,50-<60,60-<70,70-<80,80-<90,90-100 µg/L.Within each stratum, one village was randomly selected, and 20 adults aged 20-60 years were sampled.A urine sample was collected for each participant to measure urinary iodine concentration, and thyroid nodules examination were performed. Results A total of 6 214 urine samples were analyzed, reavealing a median urine iodine concentration of 257.0 μg/L.Urine samples from Anyang,Nanyang, and Zhoukou Cities exhibited urinary iodine levels above 300 μg/L,indicating excessive iodine intake. In contrast, samples from other regions showed basic adequate iodine levels.Out of 5 877 adults screened for thyroid nodules,983 were diagnosed, yielding a detection rate of 16.7%.The median urinary iodine concentrations varied significantly across the water iodine starta(247.0,260.1,and 269.6 μg/L for strata of 40-<60,60-<80,and 80-100 μg/L,respectively;H=11.885,P<0.05).However,the detection rates of thyroid nodules across stata did not show significant differences(18.4%,15.0%,and 16.4%,respectively,x2=4.471,P>0.05).Conclusions The iodine intake of adults in iodine adequate areas in Henan Province is in sufficient. It is recommended to strengthen monitoring in addition of ongoing prevention and control measures.Intervention measures should be adjusted dynamically in response to shifts in to changes of the population's iodine nutrition status.
