Correlation analysis between quality and depressive symptoms in people aged ≥ 60 years
Objective To investigate the relationship between quality and depressive symptoms in the elderly,so as to provide a basis for developing strategies to prevent sleep disorders and depression in the elderly. Methods People aged ≥60 years who participated in baseline survey of the project of Prevention and Intervention on Neurodegenerative Disease for Elderly in Henan from 2019 to 2022 as the research objects. The quality and duration of sleep were measured by the Chinese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI).The subjects with depressive symptoms were screened with patient health questionnaire-9(PHQ-9).Binary logistics regression was used to analyze the correlations between both quality and duration of sleep and depressive symptoms in elderly people. Results In the elderly people,1 595(50.52%)reported sleep quality poorer,672(21.29%)reported sleep duration less than 6 hours, and the detection rate of depression symptoms was 18.82%(594 cases). The average score of PSQI was(8.06±3.24),with the most common sleep issues being sleep inefficiency(2 930,92.81%),sleep disorders(886,28.06%),sleep latency(874,27.68%),and daytime dysfunction(751,23.79%).After adjusting for factors such as age, gender, region, the results of multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that both poor sleep quality(OR=3.310,95%CI:2.707-4.048)and short sleep duration(6 h:OR=1.482,95%CI:1.115-1.971;<6 h:OR=2.621,95%CI:1.990-3.451)significantly increased the risk of depressive symptoms(All P<0.05).Conclusions Both poor sleep quality and short sleep duration were associated with the risk of depressive symptoms in elderly people.Medical professionals should pay attention to elderly people with poor sleep quality and short sleep duration, and take effective interventions to reduce the occurrence of depressive symptoms.
