Epidemiological and clinical characteristics of human infection with Streptococcus suis in Zhuhai City of Guangdong Province,2018-2023
Objective To provide scientific evidence for prevention and control of human infection with Streptococcus suis(SS)through analyzing the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of human infection with SS in Zhuhai.Methods According to the National Surveillance Protocol for Human Infection with SS(2009 edition),epidemiological investigation of human infection with SS reported in Zhuhai from 2018 to 2023 was carried out.Blood or cerebrospinal fluid samples were collected from the infected cases for bacterial culture,biochemical identification,rapid identification by Maldi-Tof-MS,and serotyping.Descriptive analysis was used to analyze the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of human infection with SS.Results A total of 11 cases of human infection with SS were reported in Zhuhai from 2018 to 2023.Of them,nine were male,and one was female,and male to female ratio was 10∶1.The ages of them were between 25-73 years.Nine cases(81.8%)were reported between June and September.Nine cases(81.8%)were not related to occupation.The exposure modes included pork processing in four cases(36.4%),pork eating in four cases(36.4%),pig slaughtering in two cases(18.2%),and unknown cause in one case(9.1%).Oral mucosa was injured in four cases(36.4%)and hand wound in 3 cases(27.3%)before exposure.The median durations from onset to first diagnosis,admission,confirmed diagnosis and discharge were 0.5 days,1.0 days,3.0 days,and 10.0 days,respectively.Clinical symptoms included fever(100.0%),cough(45.5%),vomiting(45.5%),headache(45.5%),arthralgia(45.5%),and hearing loss(36.4%).Eight cases(72.7%)showed elevated white blood cell levels,and four cases(100.0%)had abnormal cerebrospinal fluid results.The main serotypes of SS were type 2,including nine cases(81.8%),and type 14,including two cases(18.2%).Clinical classification:general type including four cases(36.4%),meningitis type including four cases(36.4%),and toxic shock type including three cases(27.3%).About the prognosis,six cases(54.5%)were cured,four cases(36.4%)were permanent deafness,and one case(9.1%)died.Conclusions Human infection with SS is a serious threat to human health.The joint prevention and control mechanism should be improved;the training of medical personnel and awareness in diagnosis and treatment should be strengthened,and the publicity of public health education should be increased.
