Qianhu(Radix Peucedani)tastes bitter and spicy,and is slightly cold in nature.It belongs to the lung meridian.It is recor-ded in Shen Nong's Classic of Materia Medica and Collective Commentaries on the Classic of Materia Medica that Qianhu has the effect of weeding through the old to bring forth the new,which not only works on the invisible pathogens but also on the tangible pathological products.Qianhu can eliminate fluid retention and release pathogens in the exterior,so as to achieve the effect of"weeding through the old"'.Its flavor is sweet,which can strengthen the middle energizer and nourish stomach qi.That's why it has the effect of tonifying be-sides removing pathological products.Both Chaihu(Radix Bupleuri)and Qianhu can treat typhoid fever and cold,release the exterior and disperse wind,weed through the old to bring forth the new,clear the interior and disperse pathogenic accumulation,while Qianhu is more inclined to remove phlegm retention and edema inside the body,disperse wind and pathogens on the surface.Combined with Banx-ia(Rhizoma Pinelliae),Qianhu can eliminate phlegm retention and stuffy accumulation,descend counterflow of qi and resolve turbidity.Combined with Huangqin(Radix Scutellariae),it can purge latent fire in the reverting yin meridian.Combined with Shengjiang(Rhizo-ma Zingiveris Recens),it can warm the stomach and resolve retention.The new function of Qianhu is not only reflected in the level of qi,which can regulate qi and disperse qi,and is effective for different degrees of qi stagnation and qi movement condensation,but also in the aspect of activating blood circulation,which can dredge blood vessels and eliminate blood stasis on the basis of regulating qi.Disper-sing qi and activating blood circulation are the embodiment of"weeding through the old",including the pathological products of the body such as phlegm turbidity,fluid retention,blood stasis,stagnation of qi,dryness,etc.Pushing out the old metabolic waste in the body and promoting the production of new things is to make the body reach the state of smooth qi and blood and the harmony of the five zang organs.
