Objective:To analyze the origin, composition, dosage, decocting methods, indications, efficacy, and theoretical foundation of Minor Chest-Draining Decoction as well as its modern disease spectrum so as to provide a basis for its contemporary clinical applications and pharmaceutical formulation development. Methods:Ancient literature was retrieved from the library collections of Hunan University of Chinese Medicine,Duxiu Database, and BOL Medical Classics Database using the keywords"Minor Chest-Draining Decoction"or"Draining Chest".Photocopies of ancient texts were also consulted for content verification. For modern clinical research, the CNKI Data-base was used, with"Minor Chest-Draining Decoction"as the main search term. Results:Minor Chest-Draining Decoction was first re-corded in Treatise on Cold Damage by Zhang Zhongjing of the Eastern Han Dynasty. The formula includes Huanglian(Rhizoma Copti-dis),Banxia(Rhizoma Pinelliae),and Gualoushi(Semen Trichosanthis).Subsequent physicians have frequently documented the formu-la under names such as"Zhang Zhongjing's Minor Chest-Draining Decoction"or"Ancient Minor Chest-Draining Decoction,"or"Pinellia and Coptis and Trichosanthes Decoction."The decoction method mostly follows Zhang Zhongjing's instruction:"Boil the Gua-lou first, remove the dregs, then add other drugs and continue boiling."The indications of this formula are extensive, covering diseases in various internal medicine fields, including respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, and endocrine systems, with a particular focus on cir-culatory,respiratory,and digestive disorders. Conclusion:The pathogenesis of Minor Chest-Draining Decoction syndrome is the combined phlegm and heat. Its therapeutic effects include clearing heat, resolving phlegm, unblocking obstructions, and relieving pain.
