Preliminary Exploration of the Textual Structure and Academic Value of the Kangping Version of Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases
Among many versions of Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases, the Kangping version stands out as the only one containing various textual types, including classic text(jing),discussion(lun),commentary(zhu),examples(li),and marginal notes(pang zhu). The text is presented in three distinct line formats:lines with 15 characters,14 characters, and 13 characters. The 15-character and 14-char-acter lines represent the original text of Zhang Zhongjing, while the 13-character lines and interlinear annotations were added by Wang Shuhe. The marginal notes were contributed by masters from the Six Dynasties.Notably, certain types of passages in the Kangping ver-sion consistently appear in the same format, with lines that include the phrases"asking"and"answering"always written in 13-charac-ter lines.Passages referring to the resolution of the three yin and three yang stages of disease are also written in 13-character lines,sug-gesting that only the explanation of greater yang wind-stroke originated from Zhang Zhongjing, while the descriptions of greater yin, lesser yin, reverse yin,and yang bright wind-strokes were added by Wang Shuhe. For some controversial passages debated by scholars studying cold damage diseases, the annotations and marginal notes in the Kangping version may provide clarity. However, the Kangping version still has some flaws. For example,an error seems to exist between No.Articles 38 and 39,which might originate from Wang Shuhe's ini-tial version and subsequently corrected by later scholars.
