Professor Zhang Jinbo's Experience in Treating Depression due to Liver Qi Stagnation with Exterior-Releasing and Middle-Soothing Method
Professor Zhang Jinbo believes that although the overall pathogenesis of depression involves liver qi stagnation, the key lies in the obstruction of sweat pores and interstitial striae, which leads to stagnation of the qi movement. The lung and liver are closely related in both physiological and pathological aspects. When lung qi disperses and descends in an orderly manner through the sweat pores and interstitial striae,it aids the smooth flow of liver qi.Conversely, the normal dispersing and draining functions of liver qi promote lung qi's ability to disperse and descend.Professor Zhang combines the theory of zang-fu organs with the"sweat pore-interstitial striae"system and applies the exterior-releasing and middle-soothing method to treat depression due to liver qi stagnation. The treatment principle is to ventilate the interstitial striae, relieve depression, and calm the mind.He uses Constraint-Resolving Pills plus Mahuang(Herba Ephed-rae)to soothe the liver while flexibly incorporate exterior-releasing drugs to ventilate the lung's interstitial striae and sweat pores,re-store the lung's normal dispersing and descending functions, regulating qi flow, and effectively alleviating depression. This achieves the goal of releasing the exterior and soothing the middle.
