Pattern differentiation of meridians is an important part of the TCM theoretical system of pattern identification.Professor MAO Yilin,who is adept in dealing with all kinds of complicated diseases and patterns by pattern differentiation of meridians,holds that cervical spondylosis is closely related to the bladder meridian of foot-Taiyang,the small intestine meridian of hand-Taiyang,the gallbladder meridian of foot-Shaoyang,the Sanjiao meridian of hand-Shaoyang,the kidney meridian of foot-Shaoyin,and the Du meridian.Its basic pathogenesis mainly involves obstruction of Wei-defensive qi and Ying-nutrient blood caused by the pathogenic cold attacking the Taiyang meridians,disharmony of qi and blood due to qi stagnation in the Shaoyang meridians,reduced marrow and unfilled bones resulting from the deficient kidney failing to nourish them,and inactivity of sinews and bones owing to yang deficiency of the Du meridian.The treatment methods include dissipating wind and cold,and warming the meridians to relieve pain;harmonizing and relieving stagnant qi,and smoothing the meridian qi;tonifying the kidney to strengthen the bones,as well as supplementing essence to replenish the marrow;warming and invigorating yang of the Du meridian,as well as tonifying the kidney,which possess good efficacy when they are selected based on pattern differentiation.
