Application of wind medicines in treating colorectal cancer based on the latent toxin theory
Colorectal cancer is a common malignant tumor of the digestive system, which can be classified into the categories of"abdominal masses","anal abscess",and"intestinal wind(bloody stools)"in Chinese medicine. It can be caused by either exogenous pathogenic factors or endogenous ones. The characteristics of its pathogenesis can be summarized as latent toxins with a deficiency of healthy qi,where the root cause lies in the deficiency of healthy qi,and the manifestations include phlegm, fluid retention, turbid dampness, and blood stasis. As for the disease tendency,it is marked by latency, aggressiveness, gradual depletion, and a protracted course.Through exploring the latent toxin theory,it is believed that there are many similarities between this theory and colorectal cancer in terms of etiology, pathogenesis, and disease tendency. Therefore, the application of wind medicines(including wind-dispelling medicines and Chinese medicines possessing wind-like actions)offers new research ideas and approaches for the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer, with effects such as dispersing pathogens, soothing the liver and circulating qi,dispelling dampness and dissipating stagnation, promoting blood circulation and resolving masses, removing wind and unblocking collaterals, and reinforcing healthy qi to eliminate pathogenic factors.
