Treating dry eye from the perspective of latent pathogenic factors
Dry eye is a chronic ocular disease with multiple etiologies, characterized by lingering and recurrent symptoms that are difficult to completely cure, which is in accordance with the characteristics of latent pathogenic factors.Based on the fundamental feature of the disease—the loss of nourishing and moistening in the eyes,it is believed that the latent pathogenic factors contributing to dry eyes mainly include latent dryness, latent dampness, and latent fire, which are primarily harbored in the lungs, spleen, and liver. In addition, the sanjiao is the common passage of body fluids to moisten the eyes and latent pathogenic factors that harm the eyes,so the pathogenic factors can also be latent in the sanjiao. In treatment, eliminating pathogenic factors and reinforcing healthy qi are given the same importance.Eliminating pathogenic factors involves nourishing yin and expelling pathogens, that is,unblocking the sanjiao, eliminating pathogenic factors, and generating body fluids throughout the treatment course.Reinforcing healthy qi focuses on protecting the healthy qi and harmonizing yin and yang.Meanwhile, the importance of health preservation and regulation is emphasized. One clinical case is attached to provide new ideas for the prevention and treatment of dry eye.
