Effect of Morphological Awareness on CSL Learners'Incidental Vocabulary Acquisition
To explore the effect of Chinese morphological awareness on CSL learners'incidental vocabulary acquisition in reading, this study compared the accuracy of lexical inferencing, inference strategies and inference errors of 90 adult CSL learners with different morphological awareness(high and low ability)and different L1 background(Japanese/Korean and non-Japanese/Korean learners)who inferred the meanings of various types of unknown words(transparent,semi-transpar-ent and opaque words)in different contexts(sentences and passages). The results show that morphological awareness has significant impact on the accuracy of lexical inferencing. The group with high morphological awareness is more likely to in-fer the meanings of words by combining word analysis strategies and context strategies than the low ability group, while the group with low morphological awareness is more likely to use random guessing strategies than the high ability group. The er-rors of lexical inferencing at the morpheme level made by the group with high morphological awareness are far fewer than those by the group with low morphological awareness. The influence of L1 background on morphological awareness appears insignificant, and Japanese/Korean subjects use L1 strategies and random guessing strategies more often than non-Japa-nese/Korean subjects when inferring word meanings.
