On the "Sacred Space" in Bai Xian-yong's Taibei People
In addition to the time theme of"the comparison between the present and the past"as its main content,Bai Xianyong's Taibei People also has a more essential and less noticed spatial theme, which can be called"sacred space".In Taibei People,Bai Xianyong makes space a positive factor with expressive power through the"spatialization of time"and"temporalization of space".Space is not only a marker of time, but also a"comprehensive framework"that drives time flow.As a result, the manifestation of"the comparison between the present to the past"is finally implemented as a com-parison of two spaces,on which the theme of"sacred space"is highlighted and established. There exists a spatial structure in the narrative of"Taipei People"where"sacred space"(mainland)and"secular space"(Taipei)are compared to each other. In this structure, the"sacred space"is the key to the spiritual existence of the characters in the novel. When the characters are"relegated"to"secular space",their spirituality and the good qualities associated with spirituality tend to disappear. The portrayal of characters in the novel revolves around the theme of"sacred space".
