Study on the Application of Aluminum Coatings Electroplated in An Ionic Liquid on Spring Parts
Aluminum electroplating was carried out on the surface of spring parts steel fastening gaskets and connectors for aerospace application in an ionic liquid comprising AlCl3 and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride. The microstructure and elemental composition of Al coating were analyzed by metallography, scanning electron microscopy(SEM),and energy-dispersive spectroscopy(EDS).Some properties of Al-electroplated specimens were tested. The results showed that the Al coating was uniform in distribution and grain size without defects such as skip plating and peeling, free of hydrogen embrittlement, good adhesion and wear resistance, and could endure neutral salt spray test for 96 h without white rust and for 336 h without red rust, spring parts with aluminum coating have been verified by two manned rocket flights and meeting the requirements of aerospace products.
