Research Status of Friction Pull Plug Welding for Aluminum Alloy
Friction Pull Plug Welding(FPPW)is a solid-state welding repair technique that demonstrates significant advantages in repairing large diameter-to-thickness hollow structures.During the welding process, the material undergoes severe plastic flow below the melting temperature, avoiding solidification defects that may arise from fusion welding.Unlike conventional friction welding processes,FPPW is a sidewall friction connection technique, where a metallurgical bonding is formed through the extrusion of the plug sidewall against the workpiece under axial force. The distribution of temperature, stress, and strain near the friction interface during welding process is extremely uneven, making defect suppression critical for achieving high-quality FPPW joint. This paper provides a comprehensive review of high-strength aluminum alloy FPPW technology, focusing on the basic principle, the thermal deformation process, joint formation quality control(joint geometric design, welding process parameters),microstructure and mechanical properties, and further discusses future development trends of FPPW technology.
