The Joy of Empty Nests:The Effect of Intergenerational Economic Support on Mental Health of Empty-nesters in Rural Areas
Based on the data of China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey(CHARLS)from 2015 to 2020,this paper uses OLS model and mediating effect model to empirically study the impact and mechanism of intergenerational economic support on the mental health of empty-nesters in rural areas. The results show that intergenerational economic support significantly improves the mental health status of rural empty-nesters,and children's"upward"economic support for the elderly is more significant.Social participation plays a mechanism role in this process; The effects of economic support on the mental health of rural empty-nesters in different genders and different ages are significantly different."Up-ward"economic support has a greater promoting effect on the health of men and the middle-aged and elderly, while"downward"economic support from the elderly to their children only has a significant inhibitory effect on the risk of de-pression in women and young elderly.
