Gongyangism Shall Definitely Shine Again—Postscript to"The Splendid Evolution of Chinese Native Hermeneutics"
In traditional academics,the Gongyang School of the Spring and Autumn Annals,characterized by its long history,unique style,and ups and downs in its historical fate,stands out in the Confucian system.The most significant feature of its academic style is its emphasis on"subtle words but profound meanings"and the interpretation of principles,which is vastly differentfrom the academic school that focuses on exegetical research and textual criticism.The historical fate of Gongyangism rose and fell sharply.It became the political and academic guiding ideology respected by both the court and the people in the Western Han Dynasty,but it declined for more than a thousand years after the Eastern Han Dynasty.During the Jiaqing and Daoguang reigns of the Qing Dynasty,it revived and once again became popular in the late Qing Dynasty,directly promoting so-cial progress and academic changes.During this tumultuous evolution,through the deduction of generations of scholars,the core proposition of Gongyangism,the"Three Periods Theory",gradually developed into an academically rich system,especially in the late Qing Dynasty,becoming a local resource for accepting Western evolutionism.Currently,to build the Chinese school of her-meneutics,we must let Gongyangism play its valuable role,incorporate it into our academic system,and let it go global to con-tribute to world historiographical theory.
