This paper uses the theory of ethical literary criticism to interpret the teaching function in City of God.Ethical literary criticism holds that aesthetics only serves the educational function of literature,and"education"is the essential attribute of literature.City of God is widely regarded as the origin of me-dieval political theory.Through the analysis of ethical literary criticism,it is found that Augustine's teach-ings on social justice and the distribution of wealth still have a great impact on western social life.
