Language Characteristics and Translation Strategies of Speech at Beijing Winter Olympics from Skopos Theory
Diplomatic speech is crucial to the construction of national image and foreign communication,and its translation strategy has been attracted much attention.In order to investigate the translation strate-gies of president Xi Jinping's speech at the Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics Review and Awards Ceremony,this paper analyses it from the perspective of Skopos theory.It finds that the speech is rich in Chinese characteristics and adopts diverse rhetorical devices.Domesticating strategy including adaptation and free translation are mostly used to supply explanation,adjust structure and help understanding.The result shows that the domesticating strategy is adopted to ensure the accuracy and validity of translation,considering the communicative Skopos and the cultural environment of English-speaking country.
