Executive dysfunction severely impairs the daily life of patients. It is essential to explore the early markers of executive dysfunction for disease prevention and treatment. It has been found that heart rate variability(HRV)can be used to predict performance of executive function(EF).To explore the correlation between HRV and EF,this article reviews two aspects. On the one hand,we reviewed the relevant theoretical hypothesis, including the Neurovisceral Integration model and the polyvagal theory. On the other hand,we summarized the clinical studies on the components of EF(i.e.,working memory, shifting, and inhibition)about HRV.This article provides a reference for exploring the relationship between the autonomic and central nervous systems.
