Cancer cells exhibit plasticity,possessing the ability to transform different phenotypes.Plasticity is pivotal in the progression of cancer and intratumoral heterogeneity.The adaptive nature of cancer cells allows them to swiftly respond to environmental pressures induced by treatment and evade therapeutic interventions,posing challenges to effective cancer management.Therefore,gaining an in-depth understanding of the regulatory mechanisms governing cancer cell plasticity is imperative to surmount the challenge of tumor treatment resistance.In addition to intracellular signal transduction,external factors such as the tumor microenvironment play a crucial role in regulating the plasticity of cancer cells.However,a comprehensive integration of literature addressing these external factors is currently lacking.This review delves into the specific regulatory mechanisms exerted by the tumor microenvironment on cancer cell plasticity to stimulate new perspectives for enhancing the efficacy of tumor therapy and overcoming drug resistance.
