During the May 4th Movement, the famous British philosopher Bertrand Russell came to Changsha,Hunan Province to give lectures. He was invited by the Hunan Education Association with the help of Li Shicen, who was working as the editor of the Commercial Press and the chief editor of Min Duo magazine in Shanghai. The theme of Russell's speech in Changsha was"Russian Bolshevism and World Politics",mainly from Russell's previous visit to Russia.Russell's speech in Changsha has caused a great response among intellectuals, and enhanced people's attention and enthusiasm for Soviet Russia. His views on social progress and the propaganda of Zhang Dongsun and Liang Qichao were criticized by the communist intellectuals Li Da,Chen Duxiu and others, which was the origin of the socialist debate at that time.Mao Zedong listened to Russell's speech and through his own deep thinking, realized that Russell's thought of changing Chinese society through education was"theoretically meaningful, but it cannot be realized in practice",which further strengthened his choice of the Russian revolutionary road.
