To broaden the germplasm resources of wax gourd,we created new germplasm using 60Co-γ irradiation. The dry seeds and the seeds soaked for 12 h were irradiated with 60Co-γ at 0,300,600,and 900 Gy,respectively. The germinated seeds were sown, and the effects of irradiation on the germination of seeds and the photosynthetic performance and antioxidant enzyme activities of the seedlings were investigated. The results showed that low-and medium-dose irradiation promoted seed germination, and the irradiation at 300 Gy demonstrated the strongest promoting effect.Irradiation inhibited the bud growth and adventive root development.Irradiation treatments induced leaf deformity of the seedlings. Moreover, the leaf cell structure, photosynthetic parameters, peroxidase activity, and malondiadehyde content showed significant differences between irradiation treatments and the control. This study determined the optimal dose of irradiation for inducing mutagenesis and obtained the M1 generation, providing a reference for subsequent large-scale mutagenesis of wax gourd.
