Risk assessment on main campus street trees in two universities in Guangzhou City
Campus street trees are the most important part of campus greening, which can beautify campus landscape, provide shade, show campus culture and maintain campus ecological environment.South China Agricultural University and South China University of Technology are two universities with a long history in Guangzhou City, and the campus street tree landscape has the local characteristics of South China.Through the risk assessment of campus street trees, accurated judgment of their potential risks could be made, and corresponding management measures could be taken in time to reduce the possibility of accidents caused by risky street trees, which will improved the ability of campus to prevent and resist safety risks, and provided reference for the selection, management and maintenance of street trees on campuses in Guangzhou area.Using the landscape Tree risk assessment model and Visual Tree Assessment(VTA)technology, this study investigated the tree structure and growth status of 400 street trees in two universities, evaluated their risk degree R-value,and explored the correlation between R-value and chest(ground)diameter and height. The results showed that:(1)22.25%of street trees on campus were level I,68.5%were level II,8.75%were level III,and 0.5%were level IV,indicating that the risk of street trees on most campuses was extremely low or low;(2)Risk degree R-value of 4 tree species was significantly correlated with chest diameter, and R-value of 8 tree species was significantly correlated with tree height;(3)Dracontomelon duperreanum,Ceiba speciosa and three palm species had low safety risk. The risk of Bauhinia variegata,Ficus microcarpa and Ficus virens was high. Therefore, the investigated tree species were analyzed and the application, management and maintenance methods of street trees in university campus were summarized.During campus afforestation inspection,we should pay more attention to tree species with high risk, stem damaged width(C4),stem damaged depth(C5),stem structure(C6)and root restriction(C7),and took corresponding management and protection measures in time.
