Many scholars have discussed the transformation of Yang Shen's literary thought in the early and late periods. The turning point is Yang Shen's relegation to Yunnan because of the"great discussion ceremony"event which angered emperor Jiajing in the Ming Dynasty. Some scholarsbelieve that when Yang Shen was an official in the court in the early stage, his literary thought was mainly Confucianism-based andheadvocated positive values for practical use;after being relegated to Yunnan, his literary thought was gradually turned into a combination of Confucianism,Buddhism and Taoism, showing a passive and non-cooperative mentality.Other scholars believe that Yang Shen advocated the literature of the Six Dynasties in his early stage, and his works were beautiful and elegant;in his later stage,he showed a vigorous and sophisticated sideas the result of his politicalsuffering. However, careful identification and analysis show that the contents and style of Yang Shen's literary works changedin the early and late periods, but his literary thoughtwas kept unchangedin that his advocacy of the literature of the Six Dynasties was in dominant position.
