Revisions and Corrections to The Chronology of Wu Changshuo's Life:Focusing on Xiangchan Diary
Xiangchan Diary by Pan Zhongrui,a literati from Suzhou in the late Qing Dynasty, contains numerous records of his interactions with Wu Changshuo.Based on this diary and through comparisons with other documents, this paper reveals several areas in Chronology of Wu Changshuo's Life that require revision. These revisions include the precise date of Wu Changshuo's creation of Ink Plum Blossom Painting, traditional customs related to Flower Appreciation Day,the specific date of Zheng Wenzhuo's participation in the farewell spring banquet at the Wang's Huyuan New Residence, and the actual years of visits to Shantang and the Lingering Garden. These corrections not only contribute to a more accurate understanding of Wu Changshuo's life and artistic development but also provide new perspectives for art research.Meanwhile, the detailed records of the daily activities of the lower-class literati in Suzhou in the Xiangchan Diary as well as its mutual corroboration with other literary collections and diaries, highlight its unique historical value.
