The Game of Form and Meaning between English Free and Bound Morphemes and Its Discrimination Strategies
There exist the special situations where some contemporary English free morphemes(free roots)and bound morphemes(including bound roots or combining forms, prefixes, suffixes)happen to be alike in spelling,a bit different in pronunciation or pattern of word stress, and obviously diverse from one another in meanings or linguistic functions. In view of the above situations and related problems, this article attempts to discuss the differences between free and bound morphemes, explore their historical motivations in terms of the grammaticalization of free morphemes and the assimilation of English loan morphemes, and put forward such strategies as the strategy of Meaning Privacy and the strategy of Form Assistance to tell free morphemes from bound ones, compounds from derivatives. It is hoped that this study will clarify some vague concepts in English derivational morphology, which will help English learners better communicate and understand across cultures.
