Paratext and Reconstruction:A Study on the English Translation and Variation of Xunzi's Musical Thoughts
"On Music"by Xunzi stands as the first and most influential treatise on music within the Confucian school,significantly shaping the form and stance of Confucian discourse on music.Existing English translations of the"On Music"often include extensive supplementary content.This study focuses on the ethical roles revealed through"On Music"and explores the multidimensional construction of para-texts by translators.It highlights how translators primarily employ para-texts as the main arena for shaping the values of music education,transforming the Chinese discourse on harmonious and free life states into a distinct utilitarian,authoritarian,and elitist perspective on music education.The transformation of music's value and forms within the English para-texts of"On Music"underpins the fundamental differences in cognitive frameworks and cultural contexts between translators and the original authors.
