Jin Shengtan proposed that Chao Gai was not killed by Shi Wengong but by Song Jiang who framed Shi Wengong for the crime.This viewpoint has been supported by contemporary scholars such as Yang Jianxiong.In his article"An Analysis of the Cause of Chao Gai's Death in Outlaws of the Marsh",Yang Jianxiong argues from multiple angles that Song Jiang was the mastermind behind Chao Gai's murder.However,a detailed analysis of the logic,war scenes,Zengtoushi's attitude and Song Jiang's behavior reveals numerous flaws in Yang Jianxiong's reasoning.It concludes that Chao Gai was killed by Shi Wengong rather than by Song Jiang.This conclusion is in line with the overall plot and character settings of Outlaws of the Marsh.
