Based on the differences of the common industrial feed syngas compositions of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and methane, there are two main separation processes, the partial condensation process and liquid methane wash process, applied accordingly to produce the pure carbon monoxide product and pure hydrogen or hydrogen rich product. When the syngas compositions are far different from the common syngas compositions,it will be quite difficult to find a direct way to select which separation process is superior to the other one.To find a reasonable criteria of deciding which cryogenic separation process is better suited for the given syngas, process simulations were carried out using ASPEN HYSYS software to calculate the different scenarios of the refrigeration compressor power consumptions by adjusting the volumetric ratio of the key components of carbon monoxide and methane.A conclusion is made that methane wash process is superior to partial condensation process with a carbon monoxide to methane volumetric ratio no greater than 30 and methane volume fraction no less than 1.5%in the feed syngas and vice versa.
