Synthesis of NiFe2O4 nanoparticles by solvent thermal method and photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue with it
This study synthesized spinel type NiFe2O4 nanoparticles with different morphology characteristics using three solvents, and tested their degradation efficiency on the industrial standard dye methylene blue(MB)using a UV visible spectrophotometer. The results showed that when using ethylene glycol as the solvent to synthesize NiFe2O4 nanoparticles, and the catalyst dosage was 4~5g·L-1,the initial concentration of methylene blue was 20mg·L-1,the pH value was 2~4,the temperature was 50℃,the hydrogen peroxide dosage was 20mL·L-1,more than 95.4%of the methylene blue dye was degraded when exposed to a UV light source for about 60 minutes. The characterization results indicate that NiFe2O4 synthesized using ethylene glycol as a solvent has well-defined spindle properties, accompanied by porosity and high transparency, which can effectively absorb ultraviolet light and form electron hole pairs faster to decompose methylene blue. The photocatalytic mechanism of the prepared NiFe2O4 nanoparticles was studied through free radical quenching experiments, and the stability of the prepared NiFe2O4 nanoparticles was studied through repeated cycling experiments.
