Study on nano epoxy composite coatings for corrosion protection in oil and gas storage and transportation
In order to reduce the corrosion of steel in oil and gas storage and transportation,in this paper, the nanoclay was functionalized by 3-glycidylpropyltrimethoxysilane(GTS)and 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane(ATS)and structural characterized by FTIR and TGA.The incorporation of functionalized nanoclay into epoxy resin improved the protective properties of coated steel. The corrosion resistance in chloride environment was investigated by electrochemical tests. The mechanical properties(hardness and tensile strength)of the resulting nanocomposites were evaluated on carbon steel coated with epoxy-ATS/clay composites with higher coating resistance(RC=5407.88 kΩ·cm2)compared to pure epoxy coating(RC=549.51kΩ·cm2).The introduction of ATS/clay(4wt%)into the epoxy coating helped to increase the tensile strength to 84.69 MPa,which is 25%higher than the pure epoxy coating.Electrochemical and mechanical test results showed that the coating composed of epoxy silane/clay had good adhesion, microhardness, and anticorrosion properties. It is of great significance to use this new corrosion inhibition coating for corrosion protection of steel structures in process of oil and gas storage and transportation.
