Abstract
The shift of Liu Cunren's academic focus and the change of his ideological consciousness both had hidden roots during his stay in Hong Kong from August 1940 to March 1942.Based on Liu Cunren's diary, autobiography, and other articles published in Hong Kong newspapers during this period, accompanied by later narratives and memories about this period, one can sort out his social and reading history during his time in Hong Kong. All of this not only helps to restore Liu Cunren's academic context and life trace, but also contributes to the study of the literary history of Hong Kong newspapers and magazines due to his close association with publications such as Da Feng and Sing Tao Daily.Liu Cunren's diary describes his social interactions with literary scholars such as Xu Dishan and Lin Yutang, which will also provide a supplement to the study of the lives of Lin Yutang and Xu Dishan. To trace the brief history of Liu Cunren's time in Hong Kong,we still need to be wary of the false, evasive,or embellished language in his self-describing materials. This also indicates the limitations of the authenticity presented by self-reported historical materials.
