Construction of Antibacterial Hydrogel Coating on Urinary Catheters by Green Biogenic Nanoceria
Catheter-associated urinary tract infection disease can seriously jeopardize patients'health and easily lead to the development of drug-resistant bacteria.Antimicrobial coating based on nanomaterial is one of the most effective strategies to counter such infections. This study utilizes the reducing conditions imposed by Chlorella and its secretion to synthesize nanoceria(Bio-CeO2)with high surface activity. It is able to generate reactive oxygen radicals and effectively inhibit or kill pathogenic bacteria such as E.coli and P.aeruginosa.Based on the biogenic enzyme-mimicking nanomaterial, chitosan and genipin were added to construct an antibacterial hydrogel coating on the surface of urinary catheter. Results showed that the antibacterial activity of the coated silicon catheter was significantly enhanced, especially in the environment of low-level hydrogen peroxide,up to 54%.This could provide a potential innovative material and tool for the design of new broad-spectrum antimicrobial catheters and the control of infectious diseases in the future.
