Research Advances in Metal-Organic Frameworks for Dermal Delivery Systems
Metal-organic frameworks(MOFs),known as porous coordination polymers, refer to metal ions or metal clusters and organic ligands through the self-assembly process, the formation of periodic infinite network structure of the new crystalline porous materials, with high specific surface area, high porosity, high drug loading, good sustained release effect, good biocompatibility.MOFs have emerged as one of the most sought-after functional materials in the biomedical field. They have found extensive applications in disease prevention and treatment, showcasing immense potential for future advancements.Cutaneous drug delivery has gained increasing attention due to its ability to bypass the liver first-pass effect while offering minimal side effects and long-lasting efficacy. In recent years,MOFs have been applied to the field of skin drug delivery, providing new ideas for skin drug delivery preparations with their own excellent characteristics. This paper reviews the literatures of MOFs in dermal delivery applications in the past 10 years, summarizes the research progress of MOFs as transdermal drug carriers or active ingredients, and provides reference for subsequent researchers.
