Taking Water as the Medium:the formation and change of migrant villages in Hexi Corridor
Water is central to the development of rural society in the Hexi Corridor.Taking the practice of groundwater use and its change process in Dongtai Village as a historical perspective, the practice of water resource use in the three peri-ods of opening wells to build villages, shutting down wells to press down the fields, and planting cash crops shows the interac-tive process among the state, villages, the market, and villagers, and the complex intertwining of economic rationality,vil-lage community, and the will of the state in the process of social change, which builds a fragile dynamic balance of negotia-tion,contradiction,and adjustment, and keeps changing with the passage of time and the weakness of their relationship.Eco-nomic rationality, village community and national will are complexly intertwined in social change, creating a fragile dynamic balance of negotiation, contradiction and adjustment, which is constantly changing with the passage of time and the strength of the relationship between them. This process of change is related to the themes of rural development, such as migrant liveli-hoods,commercial agriculture, rural governance and ecological protection, and provides field experience for understanding the grand narratives of rural revitalisation and social development in the Hexi Corridor.
