To Endow Vividness with Form:A Study on the Translation of Children's Reading Material"One Thousand Characters"in Dunhuang Documents
The children's reading material"One Thousand Characters"was first discovered in Dunhuang documents and has a history of nearly 1,500 years,with numerous translations due to its wide dissemination.This paper explores the translation strategies and methods of Zhao Yanchun's"One Thousand Words in English Rhyme"from the perspectives of words,sentences,rhymes,the quotation of classics,and the description of scenery and products.It argues that the features of Zhao's highly"form-matched"translation reproduce the romantic charm of the original.Meanwhile,the addition of paratext can help target readers un-derstand"One Thousand Characters"more effectively.Through this case study,we hope to provide a reference for the translation of Chinese culture.
