Investigation on intermediate host infection of Paragonimus in Jianning and Pingnan counties of Fujian Province
Objective To further understand the infection status of intermediate hosts of paragonimus in Fujian Prov-ince,and to provide a basis for the prevention and control of paragonimus. Methods First and second intermediate hosts of Paragonimus were collected from Jianning County and Pingnan County of Fujian Province, respectively.Snail liver was examined by microscope, while the encysted metacercaria of crabs were examined by microscope after double-screen washing. The differences in the selection of first and second intermediate hosts by Paragonimus westermanni and Para-gonimus skrjabini,as well as the environmental differences of their habitats, were analyzed and compared. Results The infection rate of the first intermediate host,Semisulcospira libertina, was 0.2%(5/2,156)in Jianning County, and the infection rate of the first intermediate host, pseudobythinella jianouensis, was 0.3%(6/2,341)in Pingnan County. There was no significant difference in the infection rates of the first intermediate hosts by Paragonimus westermanni and Paragonimus Stolsoni(x2=0.027,P>0.05).The infection rate of Sinopotamon fukienense was 88.7%(63/71)in Jian-ning County, which was higher than that in Pingnan County(52.4%,22/42,x2=18.71,P<0.05).The infection rates of male and female Sinopotamon fukienense were 87.5%and 93.3%,respectively,in Jianning County, which were high-er than those in Pingnan County(56.3%and 40.0%,respectively,X2=10.94,Fisher's exact P=0.007,bothP<0.05).The infection degree of Paragonimus westermanni was positively correlated with the body weight of infected crabs(r=0.530,P<0.05),but there was no such significant correlation found for Paragonimus Stolsoni(r=-0.391,P>0.05).Conclusion Various genera of Paragonimus had high specificity in selecting their first intermediate hosts, while they had distinct characteristics in selecting their second intermediate hosts, but there was a phenomenon of cross-infec-tion between species.
