Investigation on the infection rate of Angiostrongylus cantonensis in Achatina fulica in public green areas of urban Fuzhou
Objective To investigate the infection rate of Angiostrongylus cantonensis in Achatina fulica found in public green areas of Fuzhou urban district,in order to provide reference for prevention and control.Methods From May to Oc-tober 2023,Achatina fulica was searched and collected under grasses and rocks from public green areas in major parks,residential neighborhoods,or alongside roads at night or early in the morning after rainfall.Stage m larvae of An-giostrongylus cantonensis was detected by homogenate method.Results A total of 213 Achatina fulica were collected,43(20.2%)of which were infected with Angiostrongylus cantonensis.A total of 10 139 Angiostrongylus cantonensis were found,with an average infection degree of 235.8(10 139/43)for each snail.The infection degree for muscle and vis-cera were 125.8(5 411/43)and 110.0(4 728/43),respectively.The infection rates were different for different body weights,with 29.0%(31/107)infection rate for Achatina fulica with body weight ≥36 g,which was higher than those with body weight less than 36 g(11.3%)(12/106,x2=10.30,P<0.05).Conclusions Achatina fulica found in public green areas of Fuzhou urban district were infected with Angiostrongylus cantonensis.There is a risk of infection from raw or semi-raw consumption of Achatina fulica meat or contact with objects contaminated with the secretions of the Achati-na fulica.Health education of the public should be strengthened to prevent infection by the Angiostrongylus cantonensis.
